Varallo, Forever Xeneize

At 100 years old, Francisco Varallo, beloved player of our Club, has passed away. Boca mourns while all of the Xeneize community offers their support to his family.

Francisco Varallo passed away this morning at the age of 100, in his house in La Plata. Our President, Jorge Amor Ameal, declared this a day of mourning for our Club. In his honor, all social activities will be suspended, and the Club will be closed for both members and the general public.

Born the 5th of February of 1910, the great "Pancho" Varallo will forever shine in the Xeneize history. His appearance on the first division of Boca will immortalize him in the institution. Los Hornos, of La Plata, was his neighborhood since birth.

From the time he was a young boy he showed his great character, playing on the neighborhood team of the neighborhood called "12 de Octubre," the same team on which his father played. He began his professional career for Gimnasia de La Plata in 1929. It was his play for this institution that allowed him to participate in the World Cup of 1930, the first in history. At only 20 years of age, he had the pleasure of playing in the finals in which our country lost 4-2.

Following this outstanding tournament, Boca took notice of Varallo. He was bought with a figure of roughly 10 thousand pesos of that time. Varallo did not disappoint. He debuted on May 31, 1931, his first professional match with Boca. It took him three matches to make his first goal. It was against Ferro on the 14th of June, in a 2-1 victory. He played 222 matches and converted 194 goals with our jersey; simply spectacular.

On the 13th of April, 1933, he scored six goals against Chacarita in a 7-1 victory. His mark will be left throughout the entire Xeneize history. Varallo also made another record.

With Boca he won 3 titles, of 1931, 1934, and 1935. Varallo appears fourth in the record of goal scorers, including amateur, behind Cherro, Tarasconi, and palermo, who recently surpassed his record.

On the 9th of December of 1939, "Pnacho" played his final match for Boca. As it could not have gone another way, he gave one more shout to the Xeneize fans during the Copa Adrían Escobar. At 11 minutes Varallo gave his final goal to Boca in a 2-0 triumph against Huracán.

After so many moments of happiness that Varallo has given us, today is a difficult day. Our idol is no longer with us, though he will always have a place in our heart.

Varallo's remains will be shows today from 4:00 pm to 12:00 am, in the Casa Velatoria Viuda de Bosia, calle 57 between 5 and 6, and at 10:00 am tomorrow morning he will be brought to his final resting place at the local cemetary of La Plata.
