It was his dream and became reality one Sunday on March 2. Martín Palermo entered Boca Juniors’s hall of fame with the kind of feat that is uncommon in modern soccer. With 180 goals celebrated noisily in local and international tournaments while wearing the club’s blue and gold jersey the Titan matched Francisco Varallo’s record held since the ‘30’s. Thus, both of them share the distinction of being the top striker of the professional era of Boca Juniors’s history.
Palermo’s record has a flavor of a feat in today’s hyper-professional soccer, because it is so much tougher and more defensive than decades ago.
But the story doesn’t end here. Martín is able to increase his count until he becomes the only top scorer throughout the 102 years of Boca’s history.
