The history of volleyball at Boca

Volleyball has been played at Boca since 1943. Only eight years later, in 1951, the club succeeded in becoming a member of the Metropolitan Volleyball League. After that, it spent many years without being part of the elite of that sport.

In 1981 Boca's Fourth Division reapplies for affiliation in order to win some titles, a success that materializes only in the ‘90's. The coaching work of Marcelo Gigante takes off in 1985 and in due time Boca is back in the Men's Honor Division.

In the nineties, the Club's team was led technically by Ricardo Maldonado and Daniel Silva and several Morgan Cups were won in this fruitful decade. In 1996, at Ferro, the men team wins the Metropolitan League against Club Italiano and takes part in the first edition of the League of Argentine Clubs for men in which, amidst a scandal, it loses the final match against Mar del Plata 's Peñarol. After that the team disbanded.

At Ferro's Héctor Etchart court Boca wins another Morgan Cup, edging Club Italiano by 3-2. Finally in 1999 Boca is promoted to the First Honor Division under the guidance of coach Fernando Seijas, while its star player was Marcelo Gigante.

In the year 2000, in front of a crowd which filled the Bombonerita to its capacity and with Fernando Seijas as its coach, Boca trashed River – the recent champion – by a decisive 3-0. It was a volleyball derby with a soccer atmosphere.

2001 turned out to be the take-off of a fantastic streak: Boca won the Morgan Cup for four consecutive years ('99 to '02).

In 2003 Marcelo Gigante's juniors of the Club were crowned Metropolitan champions by trouncing Scholem Aleijmen by 3-0 (25-14, 25-18 y 25-18), while the Sub 21 team won the Men's Open.
The main objective was to be promoted to the A1 League, the elite category of Argentine volleyball. Boca fell to San Lorenzo in the semi-finals of the A2 Series in the 2003/04 season. But one year later (2004/05) Boca achieved its objective with the leadership of Marcelo Gigante. It fell to Neuquén's Gigantes del Sur by 3- 1 in the final of the A-2 . However, with a commendable strength of spirit and grit the team recovered from that defeat and won the qualifier series against Le Coq Hacoaj de Saladillo by 2-0 (winning both legs).

The celebration took place in the Bombonerita on March 13 of 2005 and the players who achieved the promotion in the second game were: Rodrigo Peres Lopes, Walter Borrero, Miguel Bonetti, Emiliano Sanz, Sebastián Garrocq, , Nicolás Barrela, Jonathan Maglier and Carlos Almeida.

Boca is now in the top category of Argentine volleyball, a distinction which it won't want to relinquish.

But volleyball is also a woman's thing

The ladies won numerous championships in the metropolitan district, of which those of 1991, 1995, 1997 y 1998 should be highlighted. Under the leadership of Alejandro Arcondada Boca became a protagonist on the local scene.

In 2003 Boca was crowned champion of the Metropolitan Women Volleyball League by beating River in the final by 3-1. Coached by Eduardo Allona, it wasn't too difficult for the girls to show that they deserved the title they had won. Georgina Pinedo and Karina Pacheco were Boca's great players. In the same years Boca's teenagers accomplished a feat: having been down by 0-2 they won the game against Vélez and took with them their category's title within the Metropolitan League.

In 2004, led by Karina Pacheco as the “primus inter pares” of the team, Boca won the Nélida Nigro Supercup after leaving behind Banco Nación, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata – almost a derby for Boca- and River Plate. Finally, Boca lost the final match and the title of the Metropolitan League at the hands of Gimnasia La Plata.
